Artist biography

At the age of 17, Sebastian Wielandt was awarded first prize and a special prize at the IV International Marimba Competition in Nuremberg. Most recently, for the first time in 8 years, the versatile musician was a solo percussionist in the finals of the renowned German Music Competition 2021.

The modern Multipercussion Solist Sebastian Wielandt is described by critics and media as outstanding musician and praised for his musical flexibility, technical craftsmanship and innovative Show using an extensive variety of Instruments. This also includes art forms of human nature like body percussion and beatbox. He further creates a transfer from children concerts, workshops, shows in Popular music to classical concert programs that are sold out regularly and awarded with standing ovations.

Already in the age of 13 years Sebastian Wielandt is getting lessons from Prof. Isao Nakamura at the music university Karlsruhe as „PreCollege Student“. His major development he achieves through his Bachelor- and Masterstudies at Anton Bruckner Privatuniversität Linz with professors Bogdan Bacanu, Christoph Sietzen and Leonhard Schmidinger, which he is finishing with highest marks. Since 2014 he works as Substitute, furthermore Season 22/23 with time contract as orchestral percussionist in Brucknerorchester Linz. More invitations he receives a.o. from WDR Sinfonieorchester and as solo timpanist from Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen.

Concert engagements in the past included a.o. Brucknerhaus Linz, Wiener Konzerthaus and prestigious festivals „Brucknerfest Linz“, „Wien Modern“ and „Dialoge“ of Stiftung Mozarteum Salzburg. The solo percussionist of WDR-Sinfonieorchester Johannes Steinbauer wrote him a solo piece, that he world premiered at german festival „Beethovenfest Bonn“ 2023. More world premieres he played a.o. from Sarah Nemtsov, Georg Friedrich Haas and Philip Glass. His performances got broadcasted a.o. at the radio channels BR Klassik, SWR2, WDR3 or television ORF and LT1 OÖ. To the interpretations of his solo repertoire pieces he is working with contemporary dancers on choreographies. The solo work „Rebonds“ from Iannis Xenakis was performed 2023 this way together with dance a.o. as opening act for the live-show „Sabo|Tage“ at Brucknerhaus Linz, streamed on „Clubbing Live“ with more than a million views worldwide.

As chamber music partner of international demand he worked a.o. with Martin Grubinger in ensemble Percussive Planet, Wave Quartet and Motus Percussion Linz. He collaborated on the CD „Bach Concertos“ with Wave Quartet, label Sony Classical, as well as lecturer at Jeunesses Musicales DE for audio productions presenting the youth talent support program „Jugend Komponiert“ 2022. Further he received invitations as lecturer for beatbox and body percussion at „Kinderuni Oberösterreich“. As beatboxer he worked a.o. with german dance legend Niels „storm“ Robitzky, television moderator Juri Tetzlaff and Brucknerorchester Linz.

Already with 17 years he won 1. Prize at „IV. international Marimba Competition Nürnberg“. He is scholarship holder of „Deutscher Musikwettbewerb“ 2021 and was the last percussion solo finalist of this prestigious german competition since 2013. The german radio channel Deutschlandfunk Kultur broadcasted and commented his solo concerto with orchestra performance as „outstandingly dynamic, virtuosic and enchanting like a magician of sound“. Among other prizes he was awarded the „Contemporary Music Award“ as „Gold Medalist Category Percussion of International Music Competition Vienna“ 2023.
